Environmental Stewardship

Audubon International offers people the tools they need to practice good stewardship and manage natural resources responsibly. From individual action to community-wide initiatives, Audubon International helps people help the environment and fosters more sustainale communities for present and future generations.

The Toronto Golf Club is a member of Audubon International. Our Greens Staff utilize Integrated Pest Management (IPM) and environmentally responsible Management procedures. In April 2008 The Toronto Golf Club received its certification status under the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP).

The ACSP is an award winning education and certification program that helps golf courses protect our environment and preserve the natural heritage of the game of golf. By helping people enhance the valuable natural areas and wildlife habitats that golf courses provide, improve efficiency, and minimize potentially harmful impacts of golf operations, the ACSP serves as vital resource for golf courses.

To become certified within the ACSP Toronto Golf Club was required to take stock of environmental resources and potential liabilities, and then develop an environmental plan that fits the course’s unique setting, goals, staff, budget, and time. Audubon International provides a Site Assessment and Environmental Planning form to provide guidance, as well as educational information to help with:

  • Environmental Planning
  • Wildlife and Habitat Management
  • Chemical Use Reduction and Safety
  • Water Conservation
  • Water Quality Management
  • Outreach and Education

Based on our golf course assessment, Audubon International provided a site-specific report and worked with us to implement our plan. The ACSP offers educational information and assistance, but all decisions regarding the operation of the course remained with the golf course itself. Certification improves the practice of golf course management. Our course achieved certification by implementing environmental management practices in the above areas and documenting our results. Certification demonstrates our leadership as a steward of the environment and publicly recognizes and rewards our environmental achievements.

The Toronto Golf Club Greens Department has practiced many of the Environmental procedures recommended by the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses (ACSP). The assessment by the Audubon helped us to improve our already diverse wildlife population and documentation of our responsible management practices.
