WEEK 7

In week 7 of our golf mobility series, Dr. Wishloff is back to the hips:
Let's get to work on those hips!
This hip mobility series puts those hamstrings to work.
In many instances of lower back pain or hamstring tightness we can see the abdominal muscles being used as compensation for weak hip flexors.

This video explores the relationship between hamstring mobility and hip flexor strength.

GOLF MOBILITY

WEEK 3

In week three of her golf mobility series Dr. Kirsten Wishloff addresses tight hips.

Tight hips? If you're only stretching your hips for a few seconds
you won't have much impact on the joint capsule.

Joint capsules are dense connective tissues that can stiffen up with long duration of sitting or driving. Longer hold stretches, used strategically as part of a larger plan
can be very effective at expanding range of motion.
Try out this hip capsule stretch for a few weeks and see if you
notice a difference in your movement!

WEEK 2
In week two of our golf mobility series, Dr. Kirsten Wishloff
explores the role of the obliques and gives us some ways to develop them.

Your golf swing is only as powerful as your obliques.
If you're missing a strong and stable connection from your pelvis to your rib cage you will be robbed of your power.
You'll also be at an increased risk of lower back pain.
This is a very powerful exercise designed to improve the strength and stability of your obliques.

Pitching and Chipping
What we can learn from some of the best in the world.

There are a lot of different ways to execute pitch and chip shots around the green,
a lot of different shots you can hit.

This week we take a look at two things we can learn from
one of the best pitchers and chippers on the LPGA tour,
something I see as a common theme among many of the world's best.

Andrew Lovell

June 10, 2021
With the US Women's Open now in the books and the Men's right around the corner, I thought we could take a look at the swing of a major champion and see what we learn from it. In 2017 I had a call from Dr. Scott Lynn at Swing Catalyst, asking if I could do a 3D capture and get some video and pressure information on a young lady from the Philippines, who was in Toronto playing in the Junior World Championships. She had recently finished 3rd in the US Women's Amateur at the age of 15. That 15-year-old turned out to be Yuka Saso, the 2021 US Women's Open Champion.  Here's a look at a few swings from her visit, and some thoughts about how she uses the ground to produce speed:

With the province coming out of the stay-at-home order and beginning to reopen, we are now able to offer lessons to multiple players while observing physical distancing. We will be sending out information on our Junior Pods program next week, for small groups of four or less junior members. Similar to last year we will have a two-day option for two hours a day. We will open registrations at that time.

If anyone would like to discuss equipment/fitting needs, lessons or program options for the season,
when it resumes, or if we can assist you getting some practice space set up at home,
please reach out using my email at the bottom and we can set up a call to discuss.

I am always happy to talk golf!

Hopefully, you had a chance to join in or watch the recordings of our off-season Academy Zoom calls. We have had some of the most talented individuals in our sport join us.If you missed them, the links are posted on the website in the Academy section. Those who joined or watched may have noticed that in many cases it can be a little challenging to get specific, precise answers to questions at times from many of our guests.
Why is it that some of the best minds in golf cannot give you a straightforward answer?
Well, that depends. All joking aside it really does.
It depends on the person in many instances.
There are some principles on how the club and ball interact to create ball flight, some around how we create club speed. But when it comes achieving those, there are so many variables based on the person doing the swinging. It becomes almost impossible to answer any questions with certainty unless you can relate it directly to an individual. For example, ground reaction forces are something that gets discussed frequently now. I was discussing them with Dr. Mark Bull recently and he shared that he had seen Usain Bolt's ground reaction forces when sprinting, they are regarded as a good measure for sprinting speed in most cases, how hard can you push off the ground. Well Mr. Bolt, the fastest man on earth, has some of the lowest ground reaction forces measured. So, does that mean ground reaction forces are not important, no, just not to him.

We are remarkable at how we adapt to different tasks as humans and playing golf is a prime example. So where am I going with all this? Well, my point is simple. Although most instructors and coaches have some preferences, and we can find all sorts of them on the internet, they are just that, preferences. Each of us will do some things differently to put the ball on the club, building a movement that delivers the club effectively may look a little different to all of us.

Often, we get caught up on the look of our swing and don’t spend enough time
understanding how it performs, we change things based on how it looks on video
and may not actually improve anything. Understanding what is important for you,
what will improve things and what just looks different is particularly important.

So next time you search the internet for advice, or are offered swing advice by your playing partners, be sure you understand how it will improve what you do. That is not to say there isn’t some great advice out there, it just may not always be the best advice for you.

Planning Your Off-Season

With the outdoor season wrapped up in Ontario and the off-season now here,
this is a great time to get to work on your game.
You may not be able to head to the practice facility or have the ability to hit balls
and practice at home, but there is a lot you can accomplish this off-season.

The off-season is a fantastic time to make improvements
that will get you ready for next spring.
Here are three ways to utilize the opportunity the winter provides.

  1. If you have a space to hit balls, identify the improvements you want to make and get to work. In season making significant change can be hard, it typically does not feel good, the outcome is often not what we are hoping for or as consistent as we would like initially. As a result, we often just move back towards what we already do and what is comfortable. Using the off-season where you are not playing is a great time to put in the time to get comfortable with the changes. I often tell people just doing the same thing over and over is not helping you play better, hitting seven irons at the same target for 30 minutes is nothing like what happens when we play. We change clubs, change targets, change the lie and have time in between shots. When it comes to improving our pattern, some block repetitions are not always a bad thing. If you have somewhere you can make some swings, take advantage and start the process of improving your mechanics.
  2. Use the time to improve your movement. We are often restricted by how we can move, for most of us adding or restoring some mobility and range is a good thing, some of us are too mobile and adding some strength will help. I always recommend getting a physical screen, then planning what you can do to help improve your performance on course and avoid injury. You do not necessarily need to be in the gym lifting weights! Some simple movement exercises done regularly can really help. You could even look at a speed training program. The SuperSpeed program is a great one that is easy to do and has shown great results increasing club head speed.
  3. Become a better putter! A putting mat or even some carpet that rolls well and a plan you can work through is all you need. There are really three keys to putting well, can you start the putt on the line you chose, can you hit it with the appropriate speed and can you read the green and plan for the speed and read. Green reading is not easily done indoors unless you have a large green, but a little work on your stroke and some skill development done regularly can drastically improve your ability to start it online and control your speed. If you can do that well, combined with a little green reading work in the spring, you are guaranteed to shave a stroke or more off your handicap.

Winter in Ontario does not have to be bad news for your golf game. Take some time and get a plan in place for your off-season and you will undoubtedly see the rewards in the spring. Getting better at golf can be hard. It takes time and the results do not always show up immediately, in fact they almost never show up immediately. But if you take a long term approach to it, do something every day, or even every other day that will contribute to improvement over time, in this case the winter, you will absolutely see results.

If you need a little assistance building an off-season plan, please reach out. I would be happy to set up a time to discuss with you.

Winter is Coming

With the weather we have had the last couple weeks
it may have felt like winter was going to skip a year.
Sitting here looking out the window with a dusting of snow (a little north of the city)
I am reminded that winter is indeed coming.

There is a possibility of having limited individual
one-on-one lessons available indoors in the new year.

The safety of the members and staff are the priority in our planning.
With the situation with Covid-19 in our region changing rapidly,
we will have to wait and see what the next month holds for us.
The regions' restrictions and the ability to create a safe environment for all
will be considered heading into the new year.

Stay tuned, we will keep you posted.

In the meantime, if you are interested in a winter program, please contact our professional staff directly. At this time, we are not booking, but each of us are keeping track of those interested and
will reach out to keep you updated as we get closer to the new year.

Our plan from now to mid-December is to continue to work from the Academy building,
dependent on weather and regional restrictions.
The temperature in the building is quite comfortable during the shoulder season for lessons.
A reminder that face coverings are required for all while in the Academy building.

...
Additionally, we will be releasing some remote training programs for the off-season.

On the menu now are:

Vision 54 - six-week remote training programs
Dr. Mark Bull - six-week speed training programs
Dr Brendan McGlaughlin - three-month golf movement and strength programs
Dr. Kirsten Wishloff - off-season movement, strength and injury rehab programs
Andrew Lovell - off-season remote putting program

More options will be added!

In addition, all our professionals will be offering remote coaching as an option.

We will also be hosting a series of webinars with our professionals throughout the off-season.
Keep an eye on the E-News, details will be released in the coming weeks.
...

With the off-season approaching and restrictions on travelling south,
now is a good time to get set up for home practice.
Inventory levels on mats and netting will be limited.
If you are interested in getting a set-up at home, please contact me and I will be happy
to assist you with planning and sourcing a set-up.
From a putting mat, net and hitting mat to a full home simulator set-up,
there are many solutions available to allow you to stay sharp this winter.

Making the Most of the Off-Season

With the fall season upon us, winter is right around the corner.
Fall and winter can be an ideal time to work on your game.
A couple of key thoughts, identify what you'd like to improve,
make a plan, find a way to be accountable to your plan.

Here is a short video with some thoughts on off-season practice
and some updates on the Academy for the fall and winter seasons.

Wrists in the Golf Swing

This week we take a quick look at what the wrists do in a golf swing.
There are many different thoughts on what they should do out there.
We will quickly look at the movements they make and how they influence the club delivery.

Pitching Yardages

I often see people struggling with the yardages, they hit pitch shots,
matching up how much swing and what club to the distance
they need on shots too close for full or 3/4 swings.
These finesse shots can become challenging to execute.
We often find ourselves trying to figure out how much swing
or energy the shot requires while executing them.

In chatting with my friend and LPGA Tour short game coach Gareth Raflewski recently,
he shared something he does with several of his players that he felt would benefit a lot of players:

Playing From The Rough
A question that often comes up in fitting and in lessons is
how to play out of the rough? What club to use?
How do I advance it as far as possible?

After seeing a record number of 7 and 9 woods in play at the
PGA Championship at Harding Park and with the rough getting thicker,
with the ideal growing conditions I thought it would be a good topic this week:

Aim Small to Miss Small
In recent weeks we have looked at some ideas around managing targets and dispersion on course.
This week we look at being precise with our intended targets on course.
We want to 'aim small to miss small'.

An Introduction to Dispersion and Picking Targets

Here’s a quick look at the idea of dispersion and how it relates to picking your target

A really easy way for most of us to improve our scores is to simply understand the dispersion patterns we have with each club and using that information to pick better targets. I am positive that for most of us there are easily two (if not more) shots per round that we are giving up by picking poor targets.

Are You Exercising or Practicing? On the range we often see a lot of shots with the same club to the same target, a lot of standing over the ball and thinking about what we are trying to do, rehearsing some swing feels. Or, we see machine gun practice, one ball after another being fired out onto the range. One could argue that typical range behavior has more in common with exercise than practice. For most, our practice time has little to no similarities to what happens on the course.
So how do you change your practice habits to allow practice to transfer onto the course?

That really is the question we should be asking.  Here are two ideas to help.
Practice can be split into two simple categories, block practice and random varied practice.
Block practice is exactly what we described as your typical session, many shots with the same club to the same target. There is some value in this type of practice, however it should only be 20-30% of your practice time. Occasionally when working through technical improvements we may need to spend a little more time. It is useful when working through a swing change or patterning a new movement.

Random varied practice requires a changing target, club and even type of shot after each ball.  Much like you would encounter on the course.  I like to call this transfer practice; you are practicing in a way that will transfer your skills over to the course, replicating game situations, you could even practice on course. By hitting different shots to different targets, you are creating some variability and some consequence, you are simulating the process that goes into each shot on the course.
...
PART ONE of making practice more effective
is breaking your time up into block and random varied practice,
ensuring random is at least 70% of your practice.

PART TWO is more about trying to create an ideal performance state on the range.
If you want to do it on course, you need to include it in your practice.
In an ideal situation, before each shot we need to make two decisions, first what is the shot I am trying to execute - distance, direction, shape height, all the things you need to know about the shot, considering the environmental factors and picking a club. We need to have an intention for each shot, that also allows for commitment to the shot we are trying to execute.

Second, we need to create a focus for ourselves through the shot. I try to avoid the term swing thought, but essentially that is what we need. One focus to carry through right to the finish of our swing. The science indicates that we perform best when we have a sensory focus through execution of the shot. Things we can see, hear, feel are far more effective. We want to create two intentions essentially, one for the ball (the shot we are hitting) and one for us (a focus to carry to the finish of the swing). It could look like this, plan your shot, create a clear intention, assign a sensory feel for the swing, step in and execute. Once we have an intention and a focus, step in and hit the shot. I would encourage you to plan and create your intentions away from the ball. Once you are ready, then step in and address it. The ball should be in the air in 10 seconds or less once you step in, any longer and you are inviting more thoughts into your execution space which usually does not encourage optimal performance.
If you want to take it one step further,
evaluate the shot on your commitment to your intentions not the outcome.
Outcome is not entirely in your control,
staying committed to your intention is.

There are an infinite number of sensory feels that
could work, find the ones that work for you.

A great way to practice would be to
explore different intentions
and see which ones you like best.
Some examples of great sensory feels would be:
